Knowing Where You Can Carry Legally
According to Virginia Code Section 18.2-308.00, you may legally carry a handgun without a concealed handgun permit in the following situations.
- You are in your own residence or the area immediately surrounding it.
- You are not under the influence of alcohol or illegal drugs and are:
- In your own place of business
- At, going to, or coming from an established shooting range and all handguns are unloaded and securely wrapped while you are transporting them
- At, going to, or coming from a bona fide weapons exhibition and you are regularly enrolled member of a weapons collecting organization and have all handguns unloaded and securely wrapped while you are transporting them
- Transporting the handguns between your residence and a place that sells or repairs firearms and all handguns are unloaded and securely wrapped while you are transporting them
- Carrying a handgun that you may legally possess in a personal, private motor vehicle or vessel and the handgun is secured in a container or compartment in the vehicle or vessel
- At, going to, or coming from a training location where you are enrolled in a firearms training course and all handguns are unloaded and securely wrapped while you are transporting them
