Wearing the Proper Clothing and Footwear
To protect yourself not only from the weather but also from hot brass, make sure you wear the proper clothing.
- Headwear, such as a hat with a brim, will protect you from lights, sun, rain, and flying brass.
- A shirt with a high collar that is closed while you are shooting will keep hot brass from getting down inside your shirt and burning you. Loose clothing is not recommended.
- Closed-toed shoes protect your feet from hot brass. For additional safety, make sure they have non-slippery soles and provide you with a stable platform. Do not wear open-toed shoes or flip-flops.
- Clothing that is appropriate for the weather conditions and allows you to move easily will keep you more comfortable while you are shooting.
- An extra set of clothing is necessary as well. Since lead particles can get on your clothes as you shoot, you want to avoid spreading those particles to other locations. Also make sure you wash your shooting clothes separately to avoid cross-contamination in the wash.
