Protecting Your Vision

Eye protection is essential when shooting a handgun to prevent damage from blowing gunpowder, stray ricochets, ruptured shells, or firearm malfunctions. Here are some guidelines for selecting eye protection.

• Make sure your eye protection is scratch-free and shatter-resistant.
  • Choose products marked VESC-8 (or V-8) or Z87.1, or made of hard-coated polycarbonate.
  • Avoid using standard reading or non-rated shooting glasses since these may shatter on impact. Instead, get prescription eye protection.
• Select shooting glasses with wrap-around protection to protect your eyes from the sides.
• Check to make sure they work with your ear protection. Sometimes wearing shooting glasses or goggles with your earmuffs can become uncomfortable over time.
