Who May Get a Handgun Carry Permit

Laws regarding who may carry a handgun vary from state to state. To carry a concealed handgun legally in Tennessee, you must have a Handgun Carry Permit.

  • To get a Handgun Carry Permit, you must submit an application to the Tennessee Department of Safety. You also must:
    • Be at least 18 years of age and…
    • Show your photo identification to the department and…
    • Meet the eligibility requirements for obtaining a Concealed Handgun Carry Permit, including passing a background check by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and…
    • Submit proof that you have successfully completed a state-approved handgun safety course no more than one year before the date you apply.
  • The Department of Safety will issue a permit to anyone who is not prohibited from getting a permit no later than 90 days after receiving your application and other required documents.
  • Except as provided in TCA §10-7-504(o)(2)-(4), all information that you provide in your Handgun Carry Permit application is confidential and will not be open or available for public inspection.
